Richard Moll, a character actor who found lasting fame as an eccentric but gentle giant bailiff on the original “Night Court” sitcom, has died. He was 80.
Moll died Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, according to Jeff Sanderson, a publicist at Chasen & Company.
Moll played "Bull” Shannon on NBC's “Night Court” from 1984-1992 alongside stars Harry Anderson and John Larroquette. His character formed a close friendship with the court’s other bailiff, Roz Russell, played by Marsha Warfield. Bull was known for his catchphrase, “Ohh-kay,” and a dim but sweet world view.
Moll died peacefully Thursday at his home in Big Bear Lake, California, his publicist announced.
Suitable for his 6-foot-8 frame, Moll played an abominable snowman alongside Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach in the comedy feature Caveman (1981), and he was a scary, decomposing Vietnam veteran in the horror film House (1986).
Moll went on to appear in the 1999 satire “But I’m a Cheerleader” with Natasha Lyonne, in which he played a gay man who shepherded teenagers sent to a re-education camp by parents who suspected they were homosexual.
His other television appearances included “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” “7th Heaven” and “Smallville.” After appearing in the horror movie “Nightmare Man” in 2006, he starred in “Thomas Kinkade’s Christmas Cottage” opposite Peter O’Toole, Marcia Gay Harden and Ed Asner and later appeared in “Cold Case” and “Anger Management.” He also appeared in made-for-television films including “No Place Like Home” and “The Headless Horseman.”
Richard Moll also did extensive voice-over work, including playing Harvey Dent/Two-Face on three Batman cartoons, Scorpion on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, and Norman on Mighty Max. His other TV and film credits included But I'm a Cheerleader, The Flintsones, Jingle All the Way, Scary Movie 2, The Dungeonmaster, Driving Me Crazy, Getting By, Babylon 5, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, 7th Heaven, Smallville, Cold Case, and many more.
Moll was an avid bird watcher and retired to Big Bear Lake. He is survived by his children Chloe and Mason Moll, ex-wife Susan Moll, and stepchildren Cassandra Card and Morgan Ostling.
His other appearances in television included Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, 7th Heaven, Smallville, No Place Like Home, Cold Case and Headless Horseman.
As an avid bird watcher and lover of the outdoors, Moll eventually retired in a mountain community in Big Bear Lake.
