Denver Broncos win over Chicago Bears 31-28

A relief and reprieve from all of the Chicago Bears' trials and turbulence was there for the taking.

Then it all vanished as quickly as a seemingly insurmountable 21-point lead can disappear.

Despite holding a three-touchdown lead after almost three quarters, the Bears lost to the previously winless Denver Broncos, 31-28, on Sunday to fall to 0-4 for the first since in 23 years.

The offseason offered a surge of free-agent signings and new hope that a turnaround was in store after a three-win 2022, but Chicago has now lost a league-worst 14 games in a row dating back to last season.

Fields connected on his first 16 passes—setting a Bears record for consecutive completions—and 23 of 24 through three quarters, with his only incompletion coming on a Hail Mary on the final play of the first half.

"We were in a rhythm," Fields said. "Luke [Getsy] was dialing it up. Guys were protecting up front and the receivers were getting open. So we were definitely in a rhythm. But at the end of the day, we lost the game, so it really doesn't matter."

Fields threw three TD passes on three straight possessions in the second quarter— two to Kmet and one to DJ Moore—to give the Bears a 21-7 halftime lead. Fields' fourth TD pass to Khalil Herbert, a 2-yarder, made it 28-7 late in the third quarter.

Chicago looked like it was headed toward an easy win, leading by 21 after Fields threw a 2-yard touchdown to Khalil Herbert late in the third quarter. Instead, the Bears dropped their 14th in a row since a Week 7 win at New England last season.

The Bears had a chance to break a 28-all tie late in the fourth quarter. Chicago opted to go for it on fourth-and-1 at the 18 rather than kick a field goal. Coach Matt Eberflus was confident the Bears would get the first down because of how effectively they were running the ball. But instead of keeping the drive going, Herbert got stopped.

Fields said he “loved” the decision to go for it. After all, he said, it showed “Coach has trust in us to convert in that situation.”

Fields threw for a career-high 335 yards and four touchdowns. He completed his first 16 passes and was 28 of 35.

The Bears are 0-4 for the first time since 2000. Last year, Chicago finished worst in the league with a 3-14 record. With the team having secured got two of its wins in the first three weeks of the season, the franchise's last victory was on Oct. 24 last year against the New England Patriots. The 14-game losing streak is the worst skid in the organization's history.
