Jamaal Williams may miss Week 2 because of his injury

The Saints may be down to one running back for the rest of Monday night’s game against the Saints.

Jamaal Williams left the game and went to the locker room during the second quarter. The team announced that Williams is questionable to return due to a hamstring injury a short time later.

Tony Jones Jr. was elevated from the practice squad on Monday and is the only other active running back. Alvin Kamara is suspended through Week Three and Kendre Miller is inactive due to a hamstring injury.

Williams had nine carries for 29 yards before leaving the game. The Saints lead 6-3 as the first half nears its conclusion.

Williams, who spent four years with the Green Bay Packers before a two-year stint with the Lions, inked a three-year, $12 million deal to join the Saints. He received the third-largest RB contract — by total value — during the 2023 free agent period, trailing only Miles Sanders and David Montgomery, the latter of whom replaced Williams in Detroit.

Williams suffered a hamstring injury in the second quarter of Monday's game and is now questionable to return. Williams' injury leaves Tony Jones Jr. as the only other active running back on the roster tonight, though Taysom Hill could factor into the running game heavily.

Williams was a focal point of the offense in the first half, rushing 9 times for 29 yards before his early exit. If he misses any additional time, rookie Kendre Miller will be a popular option on waiver wires on Wednesday.

New Orleans Saints starting running back Jamaal Williams is being examined by the medical staff in the team's locker room during the 2nd quarter at Carolina. Williams left the game leading the Saints rushers with nine carries and 29 yards.

Even after signing Williams, the Saints weren’t done supplementing their backfield. General manager Mickey Loomis used a third-round selection on TCU running back Kendre Miller, who could add yet another dimension to New Orleans’ ground attack.

Miller dealt with a knee injury over the summer before a hamstring issue prevented him from playing in Week 1. He’s listed as questionable for the Saints’ Week 2 contest against the Carolina Panthers.
