Gustavo Hamer transfer to Sheffield United for £15m

The move follows the agreement of an undisclosed fee on Friday between the two clubs, after Gustavo Hamer informed the Club this week of his desire to join Sheffield United and with Gustavo Hamerentering the final year of his contract with Coventry City.

Gustavo Hamer joined the Sky Blues in 2020 from PEC Zwolle. The popular midfielder would go on to make a total of 132 appearances for the Club, scoring 19 goals – including in the run to the Championship Play-Offs last year where he was instrumental, netting the winner in the Semi-Final and scoring in the Final too.

Everyone at Coventry City would like to wish Gus the best of luck for the future, and we thank him for the huge contribution he has made to the Club during his time with us.

Sheffield United have moved switfty to replace Sander Berge by completing the signing of Gustavo Hamer. The midfielder has joined from Championship side Coventry City.

The 26-year-old becomes Paul Heckingbottom's sixth signing of the summer for a 'significant undisclosed fee'. Speaking after putting pen to paper on a four-year deal, Hamer said: "I still can’t believe it, playing in the Premier League is every little boy’s dream and I’m going to be doing it with Sheffield United, a massive club.

Gustavo Hamer was one of the Championship's star performers last season, along with striker Viktor Gyokeres, who moved to Sporting Lisbon on the back of it, the inspiration behind Coventry's surprise run to the play-off final.

The 24-year-old is short on match fitness and waiting for a visa but if the paperwork is signed off in time, he will make his Premier League debut against the Eagles.

"He'd have no choice, he'd be in!" said Heckingbottom.

"He's not where he wants to be, he's had no football for a long time. He's been training but not 11 v 11. He's way behind because hes not going to get that match exposure."

According to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, the two clubs have agreed a deal for Hamer, who scored 11 times and notched 10 assists last season for Cov as they made it to the Championship play-off final - a match in which the Dutch maestro scored in.

Hamer will not train with Coventry today ahead of their match with Middlesbrough on Saturday and he will head off to South Yorkshire for a medical ahead of his proposed move to Bramall Lane, which would see him replace Sander Berge in Paul Heckingbottom's engine room following his move to Burnley.
