Matt Taylor's side put in a brave display full of energy in Yorkshire - with their performance seeing them enjoy a deserved lead at half-time thanks to a Taylor Perry goal.Town in EFL Cup 2023 result : LEEDS UNITED 2-1 SHREWSBURY
Leeds hit back after the interval with goals from Joe Gelhardt and substitute Pascal Struijk ultimately seeing them clinch a place in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Town, though, left Elland Road with their heads held high following a gutsy performance full of positives.
They were made to work for their place after Perry gave Shrewsbury the advantage with a well-hit shot that took a massive deflection off young defender Leo Hjelde and gave Darlow no chance.
After a first half where they dominated possession without ever really threatening, Leeds made a double substitution at the break and increased the intensity.
Gelhardt got his first goal for the club since March 2022 and then centre-back Struijk showed a striker's instinct to finish from six yards.
Matt Taylor's visitors worked hard but never really looked like getting a goal to send the tie to a penalty shootout and Leeds should have added to their advantage.
Goals from Joe Gelhardt and Pascal Struijk were enough to send Daniel Farke’s side through to the second round, fighting back from behind after Taylor Perry’s opener.
The cup journey began for the Whites on Wednesday night, in front of 35,129 supporters at Elland Road and it was a tough encounter from the first minute against their Sky Bet League One opponents.
Farke’s side started on the front foot and had the majority of possession, looking to create chances with their time on the ball.
There were a number of efforts early in the half from the hosts, as Dan James, Leo Hjelde and Archie Gray all struck at goal, but none of which troubled Marko Marosi in the visiting net.
It was the 1,225 visitors who were able to celebrate first, seeing their side go ahead. Taylor Perry was the player to score after he got into space on the right side of the box and struck low, his effort was then heavily deflected beyond Karl Darlow into the far corner.
Town went on to press for an equaliser in the closing stages. Kenneh saw a speculative effort from distance sail over, while Shipley sent in a dangerous cross that was just too high for Watts.
And that meant - despite a valiant Town display - it was Leeds who went onto clinch a place in the second round.
