‘Full House’ John Stamos tried to quit

John Stamos spoke candidly about his time on the hit family-friendly sitcom “Full House,” and his comments may surprise you.

Appearing on last week’s episode of hot wing interview show “Hot Ones,” Stamos, who starred on “Full House” in the late 80s through the mid-90s as Uncle Jesse, admitted that he didn’t have very fond feelings for show at first – and even attempted to quit.

“I hated that show,” he said, going on to recall that the show was initially pitched to him as being similar to “Bosom Buddies,” the short-lived 80s sitcom starring Peter Scolari and Tom Hanks, but “with a couple of kids in the background.”

During the show's first table read, Stamos began to worry that his character would be overshadowed by the children. "Jodie Sweetin, who plays Stephanie, reads her lines, and people are dying laughing, I mean screaming. I was like, 'What's happening here?'" he recalled. "You couldn't even hear my lines, they were laughing so hard at her."

“The central character was love,” said Stamos. “I fought it for a long time, then I finally said what am I doing? It’s a beautiful show, filled with sweetness and kindness.” The full interview can be see.

Full House aired from 1987-1995, and was then followed up by a second series on Netflix called Fuller House, which ran from 2016-2020.

The actor was the most well-known of the cast at the time, having just recently won a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on "General Hospital." He was picturing a focus on the three men living together to help raise the girls. What he didn't expect was the kids themselves.

"Full House" would go on to run for eight seasons from 1987 to 1995. It would be followed by "Fuller House," which shifted focus to the now grown-up kids, including Sweetin, as Stamos, Saget and Dave Coulier became "background" characters, recurring across its five seasons from 2016 to 2020.

To this day, fans remain devoted to the franchise and the stars who became the centerpiece and symbol of ABC's family-friendly TGIF block of Friday night sitcoms throughout the 1990s.

Of course, Stamos would go on to reprise his role for the Netflix spinoff series, Fuller House, which lasted for five seasons.
