Madonna postpones her tour after serious bacterial infection

After news broke about a health scare, Madonna fans may have to wait a while longer before they can see her perform again in Austin.

The legendary singer’s manager, Guy Oseary, posted on social media Wednesday that Madonna will postpone the start of her “Celebration” tour and reschedule shows after suffering from a “serious bacterial infection.” He said Madonna had to stay several days in an intensive care unit after developing the infection on June 24.

“Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care,” Oseary wrote in his post. “A full recovery is expected.”

“On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection, which led to a several-day stay in the ICU. Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected,” he wrote. “At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.”

The Celebration tour, which was expected to touch on all segments of Madonna's 40-plus year career, was scheduled to begin in Vancouver July 15. Oseary's message adds a new start date and rescheduled shows will be announced soon.

Madonna announced her tour at the beginning of the year, a 35-city run that included Seattle, Phoenix, Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Washington, D.C., followed by 11 European dates in the fall. After the initial on-sale, second shows were added in several markets to accommodate demand.

Madonna, who turns 65 Aug. 16, last toured in 2019-2020 on her Madame X run, playing small venues for the first time since The Virgin Tour in 1985. While those shows leaned heavily on her 2019 "Madame X" album, the Celebration tour was billed as a career retrospective sure to be filled with the numerous hits that have made her the most successful female artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"Sorry I had to cancel tonight," the star wrote on Instagram after cancelling a 2020 performance in Lisbon, "but I must listen to my body and rest!"

Madonna's latest tour was due to start in Vancouver, Canada, on 15 July and end on 30 January in Mexico City.

But the singer-songwriter's manager said Madonna developed a "serious bacterial infection" on Saturday 24 June and all commitments would need to be paused as a result.

She was due to begin the UK and Europe portion of her tour on 14 October, scheduled to begin and end at London's O2 Arena.
