A Northern California city says it will let a homeless encampment stay on some public land. Officials in Sacramento, California, on Friday have said they leased the land for free to a nonprofit group for up to four months. The Sacramento Bee reports a group of homeless people, mostly women, had been living on the land for more than a year. The city will provide some services to the site, including up to 33 trailers for people to live in. California's major cities have been grappling with homelessness for decades. California now has nearly one third of the nation's homeless population, according to federal data.
