Earlier, there were only speculations that RR skipper Sanju Samson might be traded to CSK ahead of the IPL 2026, but now, as per a report in Cricbuzz, the Chennai-based franchise has confirmed, that they are open to welcoming the keeper-batter to the team. A senior CSK official said that no formal communication as been been initiated with the RR management, though.

“We are definitely looking at Sanju. He is an Indian batter, who is a keeper and an opener. So if he is available, we will certainly have a look at the option of having him in our fold. Who we will trade him with we have not taken that call because the matter has not gone that far. But yes, in principle, we are interested,” the CSK official said.
But Who Goes Out?
But the problem for CSK could be, what player could they be offering to RR in return? Sanju Samson was the top retention for RR at 18 Cr, while it was Ruturaj Gaikwad at the same price for CSK. And CSK coach Stephen Fleming has long maintained that Gaikwad was made the skipper with a long-term view.
Previously, there were also reports that CSK could trade R Ashwin and Shivam Dube, just to get one Sanju Samson in their team. Historically also, CSK aren’t really the ones who make the best use of these trade windows, and one of their very notable ones came in 2021, when they got Robin Uthappa from RR.
RR To Take a Call
On the other hand, RR management seems to have completed a review meeting of the IPL 2025 in London, in the presence of head coach Rahul Dravid. It seems that the management took note of the various requests from franchises, and Sanju Samson isn’t the only one on the wishlist. An Indian keeper-batter who bats at No. 6 — someone like a Dhruv Jurel, is much in focus too.
Having said that, the trade deal isn’t likely to be reached anytime soon, the report concluded.
