Corbin Carroll operating with intent to return before All-Star break ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll is trying to remain in “game mode” as he recovers from a fractured left wrist.

Carroll is operating with the intention of getting back from the injured list before the All-Star break, which begins on June 14. That means staying in baseball shape, and Carroll said he can basically do everything on the field except swing a bat at this point.

Instead of rehabbing at Salt River Fields, Carroll has been getting his cleats on and running the bases, fielding grounders, running down fly balls, taking one-handed swings and even bunting before games at Chase Field.

“My goal is to be back before the All-Star break for sure,” Carroll told Arizona Sports on Monday. “We’ll see, I gotta listen to my body on this one, but I would like to be back. … I’m operating under all intents of that being the case. If the hand doesn’t respond as well as I want, then gotta listen to that and make new plans.”

Carroll was hit in the left hand by a pitch in Toronto on June 18, and the club put him on the IL on June 24 after further imaging.

Manager Torey Lovullo said Carroll will start taking dry swings with both hands on Tuesday, which he called really good news.

“I wanna be here, support the guys,” Carroll said. “I’m trying to make sure that I can hit the ground running and not need a bunch of off days when I get back.”

Lovullo said he and Carroll have not discussed the All-Star Game, but he believes his player would be eager to play in the Midsummer Classic if nominated for it.

Carroll did not make Phase 2 of the fan voting as did teammate Ketel Marte, so he would not start. However, Carroll has a strong case to make the team as a reserve. Reserves are picked by player ballots and the commissioner’s office.

He is tied for seventh in the National League with 20 home runs. He ranks ninth with 57 runs scored, seventh with a .914 OPS and sixth with 3.5 WAR (FanGraphs).

Carroll made the 2023 All-Star Game as a rookie but struggled mightily in the first half last year before turning it around. So while his goal is to get back for the Diamondbacks as soon as he can, receiving the All-Star nod would be an opportunity to celebrate digging out of the rut last year and re-emerging as one of the game’s top players.

“I haven’t thought too much about that one, but I think on a personal level, it would be pretty cool based on where I was a year ago and the space I was in versus what I’ve been able to do so far this year,” Carroll said.

“I’m just speaking on my own personal opinion,” Lovullo added. “I know that if he gets nominated to play in the All-Star Game he would love to play. I think he’s really driving hard at getting himself right before that if that does come up. … He’s not said anything to me. … I just know the kid and I know that he’s very driven.”

Beyond the Corbin Carroll update, some Diamondbacks notes:

– Josh Naylor remained out of the lineup on Monday for the third straight day with neck stiffness. “ The neck and the right side are starting to relax and there’s a little more comfort,” Lovullo said. “Not perfect yet. Took some swings and is gonna continue to work on it,” Lovullo said.

– The Diamondbacks are still waiting for catcher Gabriel Moreno (fractured finger) to be asymptomatic, but the expectation is he’s getting close to resuming baseball activities.

– Reliever Kendall Graveman will throw a bullpen on Tuesday, and if that goes well, he will face live batters later this week.

– Lovullo was noncommittal when asked whether pitcher Cristian Mena will pitch again this year. He said there was a “small chance.” Mena has been on the IL with a teres major strain. His last appearance was in Cincinnati on June 6.

– Lovullo and several Diamondbacks players campaigned for Ketel Marte All-Star votes at a local Chick-fil-A on Monday before the game, handing out QR codes and merchandise. Marte and Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Tommy Edman are competing in a fan vote for the starting second baseman spot in the All-Star Game in Atlanta (hence the Chick-fil-A connection).

– Speaking of the All-Star Game, Diamondbacks prospects Slade Caldwell and LuJames Groover were selected to the All-Star Futures Game, a showcase for some of the top prospects in baseball. The game will be played on July 12.
