Riding a bull named Chaos in front of a sold-out crowd at the Greeley Stampede on Monday night, Maverick Potter appeared unfazed by his high score.

After all, Potter had a 7-½ hour ride ahead of him later to northern Wyoming where he plans to compete Tuesday on the first day of the Cody Stampede Rodeo. Then, it’s back to Greeley in time for the bull riding finals Wednesday night.

Potter, a 24-year-old world-ranked rider, soared into second place and a spot in the finals with a score of 83.5 on day four of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association event at Stampede Arena.

Potter said though he’s ridden Chaos in the past, he viewed the animal Monday as if it was their first meeting.

“I looked at him as just another bull,” Potter said. “I tried to think I’ve never seen him. It went good.”

PRCA all-around leader Stetson Wright, from Beaver, Utah and a member of the sport’s famed Wright family, is leading the bull riding event after a score of 85 in his first ride Sunday. Wright is ranked second in bull riding this season, according to the PRCA Pro Rodeo standings. Potter, who is from Waxahachie, Texas, south of Dallas, is ranked 22nd.

“It’s really exciting,” Potter said of making Wednesday’s short round, which he did once before in 2022. “I’m planning on taking the money. It’s going to be a dogfight between me and Stetson.”

Approximately 8,000 fans attended the rodeo Monday, according to the Greeley Stampede. Temperatures were in the 70s, neither too hot nor too cool, on a beautiful evening to start a holiday week. Sponsored by Banner Health, the theme of the rodeo was “Stampede Out Cancer Night.” One dollar of every full-price paid rodeo ticket and a portion of Stampede Out Cancer merchandise was to be donated to the North Colorado Mammography Fund.

The color pink, internationally known to represent breast cancer, was visible throughout the arena: on t-shirts, on the long-sleeve shirts worn both by Stampede volunteers and the Colorado Stars & Stripes, the all-female horse riding group carrying flags into the arena. The leg wraps of the Colorado Stars & Stripes’ horses were even pink.

The rodeo events contested Monday were: bareback riding, mutton bustin, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc, tie down, breakaway roping, barrel racing and the smart-phone grabbing event to end the evening, bull riding.

Another top rodeo performance came from saddle bronc rider Rudy Troyer.

Troyer, a 24-year-old from Gainsboro, Tennessee, finished with a top score of 82.50 following a crowd-pleasing performance on a horse named Over There.

“It was awesome,” Troyer said after his ride. “I knew if I did my job, it would be awesome.”

Troyer said early Monday evening he thought his ride would be enough to earn him a place in Wednesday’s finals. The top 12 athletes in each event move to the finals Wednesday.

There is another day of rodeo action Tuesday. The finals begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

“It should get me back,” Troyer said. “I tried to stay ahead of him (the horse). I control the things I can control.”
