A DRIVER was left stunned after discovering a hidden life-saving feature in their Ford’s trunk.
Indeed, if you have a car that was manufactured in 2002 or later, your trunk almost certainly has one.
A TikToker was amazed to discover the glow-in-the-dark emergency trunk release in his Ford, praising the attention to detail in its designTikTok / @parkinginfl GettyThe life-saving feature was mandated for all cars in 1999 and can be found in all cars made after 2002[/caption] GettyThe emergency trunk release became a requirement after a woman’s harrowing experience in 1995[/caption]It recently blew the mind of TikToker @parkinginfl – who showed his viewers the emergency trunk release in his Ford.
In the video, which has over 285,000 views, he captioned it with: “Someone at Ford deserves a reward for this.”
“I love that someone at Ford Motor Company took the time to put this little diagram on this thing,” he says.
“Freaking love the attention to detail.”
Shaped like a letter T and made from glow-in-the-dark material, the lever shows a diagram of a person running away from an open trunk.
An arrow points away from the trunk in the direction the person is running, while another arrow instructs the driver to pull down on the lever to open the trunk.
However, the safety feature wasn’t mandated by Ford, but rather from a woman called Janette Fennell – who in 1999 helped make it a requirement in all new cars.
According to Hustle, she and her husband experienced a kidnapping in 1995 after two armed robbers left them to die inside their Lexus’ trunk.
They eventually were able to get the trunk open by using a small piece of metal.
Fennell said she found it “ridiculous” that car manufacturers didn’t have a way for people to escape trunks, and she wrote to each of them to inquire about it.
But after compiling the data of many other people who got locked in trunks of cars, she managed to contact the then-US representative who sponsored a bill to investigate the incidents.
Naturally, many car manufacturers pushed back, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration eventually passed the mandate.
Since then, there hasn’t been a documented trunk-related fatality in a car that has the emergency trunk release.
Fennell has since launched a nonprofit called Kids and Cars.
She is also working to make vehicles safer through various legislation.
She told Hustle: “If you look at any safety feature in your vehicle, just know there is somebody who fought and fought and fought to make sure that was there.”
How To Pump Gas
There are several steps you can take to safely pump gas.
Find Your Pump
Drive up to a pump, aligning your car’s fuel tank with the nozzle. Look for the fuel indicator arrow on your dashboard or the manual to know which side your gas tank is on.
Pay for Your Gas
You can either pay at the pump with a credit/debit card or pay inside. If paying inside, give the attendant your pump number and the amount you want to spend.
Open Your Fuel Lid
Use the lever or button inside your car to open the gas tank lid, or open it manually if your car doesn’t have a lever. Unscrew the gas cap.
Pick the Right Nozzle
Grab the correct nozzle from the pump (regular, premium, or diesel). Insert it securely into your gas tank.
Select Fuel Grade
Choose the fuel grade (usually regular, mid-grade, or premium). Check your car’s manual for the recommended fuel type.
Start Pumping
Pull the trigger to begin pumping. Most nozzles have a lever that locks in place so you don’t have to hold it.
Wait for Automatic Shutoff
Keep an eye on the pump. It will automatically stop when your tank is full. You’ll hear a click when this happens.
Remove the Nozzle and Close the Tank
Carefully remove the nozzle, return it to the pump, and make sure the gas cap is tightly secured.
Get Your Receipt
If you paid at the pump, decide if you want a receipt. If you do, print it; if not, finish the transaction.
Reset Your Odometer
Inside your car, reset the fuel odometer to track your mileage. Usually, turning your car back on will reset it.
