BRENTWOOD — After 34 years in law enforcement, Brentwood Police Chief Tim Herbert will retire in September. The city will begin looking for a permanent replacement in the coming months.

With Herbert set to retire on Sept. 5, an interim police chief will be appointed. According to the city, a permanent chief will be selected once the City Council names a new city manager.

In April, former City Manager Tim Ogden announced his resignation. The Brentwood City Council then appointed Darin Gale to fill the role on an interim basis.

Herbert, who has served in Brentwood since 2002, including the last three years as its police chief, said it has been “an absolute honor and privilege” to work with the dedicated members of the Brentwood Police Department, city staff, and residents.

“I’m excited to retire, but I’m also very grateful for what the community has offered over the years,” Herbert told this news organization. “I’ve raised my kids in Brentwood and served the citizens while doing that, so I am grateful. We have a wonderful police department and great staff who will continue serving residents with great professionalism.”

Herbert said he plans to enjoy his retirement by relaxing, traveling, and spending time with his family.

“I’m not leaving California, a lot of people have asked me if I’m packing up and leaving,” he chuckled.

Gale said Herbert’s leadership made a “lasting impact on the Brentwood community.”

“His dedication to public safety, integrity, and community engagement has strengthened our Police Department and set a high standard for those who follow,” said Gale. “On behalf of the City Council and entire City team, I want to express our sincere appreciation for his decades of service and wish him all the best in retirement.”

Herbert was promoted as the city’s 12th police chief in September 2022 following an internal recruitment. In December 2021, Herbert served as acting captain for a month while then-Police Chief Tom Hansen was temporarily roped in as assistant city manager due to low staffing.
