Aston Martin explains Newey’s trackside role in Monaco ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Adrian Newey will make his first public appearance trackside at Monaco this weekend with Aston Martin, and team principal Andy Cowell has outlined exactly what the team’s new managing technical partner’s role will be in the Principality.

Though Newey officially joined the team in March after his high-profile exit from Red Bull, he’s largely been working behind the scenes at Aston’s factory at Silverstone Park.

However, his presence in Monaco underscores his immediate influence on his new team’s 2025 campaign, as Cowell highlights Newey’s ability to identify strengths and weaknesses in the outfit’s.

With recent upgrades sparking optimism after a challenging season start, the celebrated designer’s return to the paddock marks a significant moment for Lawrence Stroll’s ambitious team.

Offering Insight to Bolster Team Dynamics

"This weekend, he's here and he will see the way we operate in a race weekend environment," Cowell told the media in Monaco on Thursday.

"The way we optimise the car. We've got the way we play a different strategy so having his experience and insight looking to see what's going well, what's not so well, just helps with our jobs on what to work on to become a stronger team."

Newey’s presence, then, is not just ceremonial. While he certainly won’t be there to redesign the car on the fly, his unparalleled experience will be used to observe and advise, lending perspective to a team seeking to improve the performance of its 2025 AMR25.

Imola offered a glimmer of hope for Aston Martin, after a challenging start to the season. The team’s latest upgrade package brought a meaningful improvement — something that hasn’t always been the case in recent years.

The timing of Newey’s deeper integration, then, couldn’t be better.

Eyes on 2026, But Not Ignoring the Present

Still, Cowell made clear that Newey’s primary focus remains on the future — specifically, the sweeping regulation changes coming in 2026.

"So when Adrian joined at the beginning of March we said 'right, we need Adrian to focus on 2026 and the architecture of the car', which is what he's primarily been focused on," Cowell explained.

"Lunchtime conversations have not just included what he's eating or what he's been doing on the weekend. It also included conversations about our existing car — the '25 car — and what might be issues but it's a separate engineering team that has been working on the '25 car."

Even from his base at the factory, Newey has already begun shaping the team’s technical DNA.

"As he's been working on the '26 car he gets to see the tools that we've got, specifically CFD, wind tunnel, the whole journey of information from the drawing board to wind tunnel results," the Aston chief continued.

"And with that we learn about what are our strengths, what are our weaknesses and how do we maintain our strengths? And improve our weaknesses."

Cowell reiterated the significance of Newey’s contribution to the broader organisation.

"Adrian's experience, Adrian's insight, Adrian's creativity can help the whole team," he said.

"We need to engineer a faster car but we need to maximise the performance of it until the very last lap of every race so his insight and creativity will help absolutely everyone in the whole team."

As Aston Martin navigates Monaco’s challenging streets, Newey’s presence signals a team poised to blend immediate improvements with long-term ambition, setting the stage for a hopefully transformative era.
