Golf’s top events are on a hot streak, with the run of all-time classic tournaments continuing with Scottie Scheffler’s dramatic win at the PGA Championship.

It followed on from Rory McIlroy’s historic Masters success and now the world-famous Oakmont will be the perfect stage for another blockbuster week.

Bryson DeChambeau will be the defending champion following his spectacular 1-stroke win over McIlroy at Pinehurst a year ago.

Scheffler, McIlroy and DeChambeau will once again be among the favourites in Pennsylvania as more drama awaits.

US Open 2025: Field and tee times

The US Open will be contested by a maximum field of 156 players and will include a cut on Friday night after the second round is complete.

Unlike the other majors, the US Open does not offer lifetime exemptions to previous champions, meaning only winners back to Jordan Spieth’s victory in 2015 automatically qualify.

The tournament will, of course, include most of the world’s top 100 players.

Tiger Woods will not be in action as he continues his rehab after undergoing Achilles surgery in mid-March.

Other players who are in the field include England’s 2024 US Senior Open champion Richard Bland and 2024 US Amateur winner Jose Luis Ballester.

Qualifying will run throughout May and June with a host of spots up for grabs for players all around the world.

Guido Migliozzi, Edoardo Molinari and Jordan Smith qualified from the event at Walton Heath Golf Club, while Carlos Ortiz and Adam Schenk made it from Bent Tree Country Club’s tournament.

The full field for the US Open can be found here.

Tee times and groupings for the opening two rounds of the major will be announced on the Tuesday of tournament week.

The prize fund is yet to be confirmed but will likely be slightly more than the $21.5million on offer last year. DeChambeau took home $4.3m as the winning champion.

US Open 2025: The Course

The course at Oakmont, designed by Henry Fownes in 1904 and renovated by Tom Fazio and Gil Hanse since, will measure a maximum yardage of 7,342 yards and be a par 70.

It is one of the oldest and most prestigious courses in the United States and ranks among the hardest.

Oakmont is famous for its huge sloping greens, heavy bunkering and brutal rough – a true US Open test.

It includes the iconic Church Pew Bunker that comes into play on the 3rd and 4th holes. The bunker is 100 yards long and includes twelve grass-covered ridges, which make lies highly unpredictable.

The course will boast some dauntingly long holes as players face the 632-yard par-5 12th, the 507-yard par-4 15th and the 289-yard par-3 8th, which will become the longest par-3 in US Open history.

Being a par 70, there are only two par-5s on the course, both over 600 yards long, meaning scoring low will be extremely tough and Oakmont chiefs are eager to have the winning score be over par.

US Open 2025: What has been said?

DeChambeau beat McIlroy by one stroke in a dramatic final few holes at Pinehurst last year.

DeChambeau describe his brilliant 50-yard bunker escape on the 18th as ‘the shot of my life’.

He added: “That was huge, to get up and down and win this prestigious championship – that will be the highlight of my life.

“Rory is one of the best to ever play. Being able to fight against a great like that is pretty special. For him to miss that putt [on 18], I’d never wish it on anybody. Luckily, things went my way.

“I even saw on 10 where he made birdie. I’m like, ‘oh, man, he’s gunning, he’s going for it’. So I had to put my foot on the pedal and push down pretty hard.

“I could hear ‘Rory, Rory’ chants. That was fun because it gave me the knowledge of what I had to do.

“There was also a lot of, ‘go USA, go Europe’. It was a fun battle between us.”
