Ange Postecoglou could sign off Tottenham Hotspur career with stinging gesture to fans – he’s already sealed own fate ...Middle East

Ange Postecoglou could direct his frustration at Tottenham Hotspur fans if he guides the club to Europa League glory – he’s gone either way.

That’s the view of Arsenal legend Martin Keown, who believes the 59-year-old has already sealed his own fate following a nightmare Premier League season.

Tottenham shockingly languish 17th in the top-flight table and are on course to finish in their lowest position since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.

With just one game remaining, Spurs have already broken their record for most Premier League defeats in a single season with 21.

Meanwhile Tottenham have also equalled their most defeats across all competitions in a single season having lost on 25 occasions – the same as they managed in the 1991/92 campaign.

And with just 38 points on the board, they will end the campaign with their lowest points total, which currently stands at 44 from the 1997/98 term.

But Spurs can end the season on a positive note by winning the Europa League on Wednesday night – live on talkSPORT – against Manchester United.

Doing so would secure the club’s first trophy since lifting the League Cup in 2008, while it would be their first European success since winning the UEFA Cup 41 years ago.

However, ending Spurs’ 17-year drought may not be enough to convince the board – and the fans – that he deserves a third season in the dugout.

Postecoglou, who guided his side to fifth place last year, has endured many unsavoury run-ins with supporters this term.

The ex-Celtic boss is no stranger to confronting disgruntled fans, having done so at Bournemouth in December, in the home loss to Leicester in January and after the 2-0 away defeat at Fulham in March.

He even appeared to cup his ears towards fans during the 1-0 loss at Chelsea last month – a claim he has strenuously denied.

And Keown believes that Postecoglou could aim a stinging gesture towards his haters should Spurs triumph over the Red Devils – which he is tipping them to do.

Speaking to talkSPORT.com about Spurs’ form ahead of the upcoming final, the three-time Premier League champion declared that Postecoglou’s days in north London are numbered.

He said: “Their performances in the Premier League, to lose 20 [21] games of football, is really quite embarrassing.

“I think that’s going to cost the manager his job.

“But when he goes, he’s probably going to be able to say, ‘I’ve won a trophy in my second season, off you go.’

“He might want to put two fingers up to his own fans, to the critics.

Spurs are on course for their worst Premier League finish, which could lead to Postecoglou’s sacking

“But ultimately I see them [Spurs] winning this game.

“You could say Man United, they think their name’s on it, they’ll see it right through to extra-time, they’ll sit as a [back] five and go to penalties and win it.

“That’s the only way I see Manchester United winning it – Spurs look stronger.”

talkSPORT understands that Postecoglou isn’t guaranteed to remain at Tottenham even if they win the Europa League.

Former Ajax boss Francesco Farioli is an option for Spurs, while Fulham’s Marco Silva is also believed to be in contention.

And Keown is of the opinion that Postecoglou will surely be heading for the exit door with Spurs sitting just a place above the relegation zone.

Pressed as to whether Postecoglou should resign if he wins the Europa League to take control of his future, Keown remarked: “No, not at all. And there may be a change of tact.

“You do feel though, the drop-off – they were fifth the year before – to go to where they are now, 17th, is ridiculous.

“But you could see them reversing that in the next season.

“Whether that’s with a new manager, I don’t really know. I don’t think it can happen.

“You can’t lose 20 [21] games of football [in the league] and still be there the next season – even if you win a trophy.

“Look, it’s a big call to be made, but they’ve probably already made it.”
