The Weld County Board of Commissioners wants to “flip the script on aging” this May.
The commissioners proclaimed May as Older Americans Month to recognize older adults’ influence on communities, according to a county news release.
The Older Americans Month’s national theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” encourages a shift in perception about older adults, Weld County Human Services Director Jaime Ulrich said in the release.
“We want to celebrate the vibrancy, resilience and continued potential of individuals as they age,” Ulrich said.
During the month, Weld County wants to showcase the Department of Human Services’ commitment to advocating for the aging population through programs that provide access to in-home care, chore services, transportation, nutrition education and more. The department’s team and community partners have served more than 80,000 Friendly Fork meals and 38,000 Meals on Wheels to older adults.
“These programs address the diverse needs of adults, underscoring the importance of ongoing advocacy to ensure these resources remain robust and accessible to all those who need them,” Ulrich said.
The commissioners honored Older Americans Month and Foster Care Month at the board meeting on May 5. Weld County recognizes the “strength, wisdom and contribution” of older adults every day, not just in May, as a call to action for the rights of all older Americans, the release said.
Ulrich said the two proclamations provided an “excellent example” of her department’s impact and how it spans “from young children to older Americans.”
