A MAJOR supermarket chain and Aldi rival with over 12,000 stores has expansion plans underway, rolling out two new locations this month.

As Lidl breaks ground on its new stores, shoppers can expect to see even more delicious offerings and great deals from the German grocer.

Lidl, a German international discount retail chain, has over 12,350 stores across 31 countries.

In the US, the company operates roughly 180 locations primarily in the East Coast, spanning Washington DC and nine states:

Lidl has slowly been expanding its presence in the US, continuing to add more supermarkets.

The grocer recently opened a new location at 91 Trotters Way in Freehold, New Jersey – roughly 20 miles from Staten Island – on May 9.

At the grand opening, customers were given free samples and Lidl merch, and the first 100 shoppers in line received Lidl gift cards worth $5 to $100.

Lidl fans will also see the opening of a new store at 490 Fulton Street in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday, May 23, according to a company announcement.

The grocer will begin welcoming shoppers with the official ribbon cutting ceremony at 7:40 am, although the store will be open from 8 am to 9 pm daily.

Aside from these two spots, Lidl recently opened a handful of other new supermarkets in the area.

The German grocer opened two New Jersey locations in past months – Paramus in February and Livingston in December.

Lidl also recently held several grand openings in New York, including in Brooklyn, Pelham, the Bronx, and Glen Oaks, and the chain plans to open another in Manhattan this summer.

Aside from New York, the grocer has set its sights on expanding within two other strategic markets – Washington DC and Atlanta.

Lidl’s goal is to be “really the only grocery store that offers incredible quality at unbeatable prices, despite rising costs with inflation or other external factors,” Frank Kerr, chief customer officer for Lidl US, told Modern Retail.

BATTLE OF THE GERMAN GROCERS

Lidl has frequently been pitted against Aldi, another popular German-based grocery store chain.

The latter chain was brought to the US decades before Lidl, in 1976, while the first US Lidl location was not opened until 2017.

For this reason, Aldi has a much stronger foothold in the US, with roughly 2,300 stores across the country – and an estimated 3,000 by 2028 thanks to the chain’s ambitious expansion plans.

Lidl Favorites

Lidl reintroduced its brand last fall with a new campaign, referring to itself as “the super-EST market.”

The German chain emphasized the value of its curated collection of private label goods, global imports, and everyday name brands.

Lidl encouraged shoppers to take a trip to its new Brooklyn store once it opens and try out some of its best-selling items:

The Famous 49 Cent Croissant Iced Lemon Muffin New Butcher’s Specialty Private Label Meat Brand Bon Gelati Mini Mix Ice Cream Bars Lidl Preferred Selection Frozen Tiramisu Lidl Preferred Selection Parmigiano Reggiano Lidl Preferred Selection Prosciutto Kong Strong Energy Drink Lidl Snack Day Extra Flavor Wavy Potato Chips Preferred Selection Chilled Italian Pasta Preferred Selection Pizza

While both are German-owned discount supermarkets, they are separate companies – Aldi is owned by the Albrecht family while Lidl is part of the Schwarz Group.

Because they originate from the same country and operate on a similar model, focusing on low prices and a limited selection of mostly private-label products, shoppers frequently compare the two.

Content creator Soozie the Foodie took her first trip to a Lidl store and was pleasantly surprised by the product selection, sharing pictures of her finds on Facebook.

“My very first time going to a Lidl!” wrote the shopper. “A lot of people say Lidl is like the better version of Aldi – but I’ll let you be the judge of that from the stuff I found.”

She shared a handful of photos of unique products she spotted while browsing the aisles, including chocolate and pistachio ice cream cones, sea salt and pepper calamari, German cheesecake, hatch chili popcorn, and more.

Fellow shoppers shared their opinions on the two rival grocers in the comments section.

One customer praised Lidl for its quality and selection of international items, but said that Aldi likely came on top for its array of everyday staples.

Another shopper commended Lidl as being the superior store, raving over its fresh bakery pastries and bread.

“Lidl! Better selection, variety, and quality,” wrote a third.

As Lidl expands its US presence, Aldi is working to draw in new customers with irresistible deals.

For example, the chain is selling a cheap $4.49 item that will transform your garden into a colorful summer paradise.
