Sarens’ North Sea platform lift ‘one of most significant in history’ ...Middle East

News by : (GCR) -
Belgian heavy-lift specialist Sarens has carried out what it describes as “one of the most significant projects in our history”.

The company worked on the installation of BorWin5 high-voltage direct current (HVDC) platform.

It will connect the turbines of the 900MW He Dreiht wind farm being built in the North Sea with the German grid, helping to supply green energy to around a million households.

The platform converts the AC current generated by the turbines into DC and transmits it to an onshore reception point through 230km of cable.

Getting it to the barge

This platform was fabricated in Puerto Real, near the Spanish city of Cadiz, by Dragados Offshore, and is now en route to the North Sea by barge.

Once in its final location, it will be installed, together with the 64 Vestas 15MW turbines, with a view to completing the commissioning process before the end of the year.

The jacket had to be moved about 1.5km (Sarens)

Sarens transported the jacket and topside 1.5km from the Puerto Real factory to the barge.

To do this, it used 48 load cells and 500-tonne jacks, as well as 476 axle lines of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).

Three weeks of rain

The team had to deal with the effects of three weeks of heavy rains, as well as the irregular form of the jacket, which made the assembly of transport stools challenging.

José Martínez, Sarens’ key account manager, said the feat proved Sarens’ “ability to adapt to any type of task thanks to the use of the most advanced high-tech equipment, but especially thanks to the experience we have acquired over decades in projects of all types and magnitudes”.

Sarens has worked on wind farm installation in French projects at Fécamp, Saint Nazaire, and Saint Brieuc, off the coast of Brittany.

More recently, it moved 176 turbines for the Coastal Virginia Offshore wind farm in the US and the Moray West wind farm in the UK.
