DRS, May 12: With IPL 2025 suspended, the focus shifts to India vs England Test series that starts next month. As the BCCI is working on a date to resume IPL, the selectors are busy discussing the future of players such as Mohammad Shami and Shreyas Iyer in Tests. They are also in discussion to name India’s next Test captain after Jasprit Bumrah dropped out of the race. In women’s cricket, May 11 was a good day for India. Harmanpreet Kaur & Co beat Sri Lanka in the tri-series final to lift the trophy.
The other big update regarding IPL was about Australians. With the BCCI likely to extend the IPL till May 30, some of the Australian players like Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc are unlikely to return.
IPL 2025 to resume on May 16?
With India and Pakistan agreeing to a ceasefire deal after escalating tensions between the two neighbours, it’s good news for cricket fans. The BCCI is working out a new fixture to resume the tournament next week. BCCI is looking at May 16 or 17 as the start date. However, the one-week break could force the tournament to push the final to May 30. That’s not all. Among the few plans, IPL could be played across four cities — Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. The Indian board is also keeping a tab on the weather in Kolkata and the final could be shifted to Ahmedabad.
India Women clinch Tri-Series
In women’s cricket news, India Women’s Cricket Team thrashed Sri Lanka by 97 runs to clinch the tri-series, which also involved South Africa. Smriti Mandhana slammed her 11th ODI ton as India posted a massive 342/7 total. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 245 after Sneh Rana ran through the batting line-up, scalping four wickets for 38 runs. With the Women’s ODI World Cup in October, the tri-series win will boost India’s confidence.
Brief scores: India 342/7 in 50 overs (Mandhana 116, Deol 47, Rodrigues 44) beat Sri Lanka 245 all out in 48.2 ovs (Athapaththu 51, Silva 48; Rana 4/38, Amanjot 3/54)
Jasprit Bumrah sacrifices Test captaincy
Another big news dropping ahead of the India vs England Test was of Jasprit Bumrah. The pacer, who was the frontrunner to succeed Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain, dropped out of the captaincy race. Bumrah led India to a win in the Perth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, with workload management paramount for Bumrah, he dropped out. Bumrah is unlikely to play all five matches of the Test series in England as he has just returned from a three-month injury layoff. Shubman Gill is now the frontrunner to replace Rohit, who returned from Test cricket this week. Rishabh Pant is also in the race. But Gill is the favourite considering his MS Dhoni-like calm.
Gujarat Titans return to training
With India-Pakistan tensions de-escalating, Gujarat Titans have returned to practice. Barring Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee, all players stuck around. However, with the entire Indian contingent available, GT have resumed practice with IPL 2025 likely to resume next week. Buttler and Coetzee are expected to return next week. GT are a win away from sealing the playoff spot, enjoying top spot in the points table with 8 wins from 11 matches.
Josh Hazlewood unlikely to return
While GT will be relieved, Royal Challengers Bengaluru are in a tough spot. Their captain, Rajat Patidar, is already nursing an injury. Now, their worst fears could come true. Josh Hazlewood, who has suffered a shoulder injury, is unlikely to return when the IPL resumes. Hazlewood did not feature in RCB’s last match before the IPL was suspended. With the WTC Final starting on June 11, Hazlewood will take that time to recover and miss the remainder of the IPL. Some Australian players like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are also unlikely to return to India for the IPL. Cricket Australia is backing their players if they choose not to return.
Future tense for Shami, Shreyas Iyer
As the BCCI Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is set to pick the squad for India vs England Test series, Mohd Shami and Shreyas Iyer will be watching the developments closely. Despite his good run of form in IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer is not the selectors’ favourite for the Test series against England. While Iyer slammed a double century and a century in the Ranji Trophy, he wasn’t consistent. However, things could change if Virat Kohli retires from Tests. That could open up a spot for Iyer.
However, Mohd Shami may not be that lucky. Post his long 14-month injury layoff, Shami has struggled for rhythm, speed and length. In IPL, he was dropped from Sunrisers Hyderabad Playing XI after enduring a poor run of form. With Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Mohd Siraj back in form apart from Bumrah, Shami may not travel to England.
