Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick in El Clasico saw him surpass a stunning 33-year record.

The Real Madrid forward scored three goals at Barcelona in La Liga on Sunday to take his tally for the season to 39.

Mbappe opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the fifth minute before doubling his tally just nine minutes later.

Barcelona made a statement with their response, though, scoring four goals before half time to turn the match on its head.

Raphinha’s brace followed efforts from Eric Garcia and Lamine Yamal at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.

Mbappe reduced the deficit after the interval as he secured his third Real Madrid hat-trick.

The 26-year-old had already broken a club record with his first two goals before completing his treble.

His strikes took his tally for the campaign to 39 in 52 matches across all competitions since his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

It is the most ever by a player in their first season at Real Madrid, breaking Ivan Zamorano’s record from 1992/93.

Zamorano had scored 37 in 45 matches having signed from Sevilla over three decades ago.

Mbappe has also shattered the tally achieved by Cristiano Ronaldo in his first year in Spain.

The Portuguese scored 33 goals following his move from Manchester United in 2009.

He still has some way to go to beat Ronaldo’s best season in Madrid, though, which saw him score 61 goals during the 2014/15 campaign.

Mbappe has opportunities to further extend his record before the end of the season.

Real Madrid have three matches remaining in La Liga following the season’s final El Clasico.

Meanwhile, they will play at least three times at this summer’s expanded Club World Cup in the USA.

Mbappe is also now top of the La Liga scoring charts after his three goals against Barca.

His strikes see him move to 26 league goals, leapfrogging Robert Lewandowski in the race for the Golden Boot.

If he can remain top of the standings at the end of the season, Mbappe would be the first Real Madrid player to do so for three years.

Karim Benzema was the last Los Blancos star to finish as La Liga top scorer after 27 goals during the 2021/22 season.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side host Mallorca and Real Sociedad either side of a trip to Sevilla this month to see out their campaign.
