For wrestling fans of a certain age, Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts are grappling loyalty.

Perhaps best known for their 1980s and 1990s WWE fame, the duo were iconic figures during the cartoonish era that was then the World Wrestling Federation.

Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts was a main player in WWE in the early 1990sWWE

Duggan was the winner of the first pay-per-view Royal Rumble in 1988, having signed for WWE the prior year after making a big splash in other territories.

Developing into a patriotic character known for expressing his love of the United States of America, the New Yorker would thrust his trusty wooden 2 x 4 in the air and salute fans, US flag often not far behind.

He battled many a villain across the early 1990s, too, rarely coming out on top but always coming back for more as a true WWE underdog – his memorable career earning him a place in the company’s Hall of Fame in 2011.

Roberts, meanwhile, became a household name during a similar time, a softly spoken and slippery individual who carried with him to the ring a python he named Damian.

Much like Duggan, though, Roberts’ many career glories in terms of championships came away from WWE – there he was a hugely memorable character and one of the deadliest villains of the era.

The Texan star debuted in WWE in 1996 and appeared prominently until a controversial exit in 1992 following defeat to The Undertaker at WrestleMania VIII.

Again aligned to his one-time colleague, Roberts left WWE but later returned, a further run in 1996-1997 seeing him fall victim to Stone Cold Steve Austin in the 1996 King of the Ring Final that spawned the Rattlesnake’s ‘Austin 3:16’ speech.

Duggan, now 71 years old, is no longer actively involved in wrestling. Though Roberts, two years his junior, still appears in All Elite Wrestling in an on-screen manager role.

He joined Duggan in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2014 and, more than a decade later and some 37 years after they were first in WWE together, the two have caught up again at a Charlotte Knights game – the Knights being an affiliate outfit of Chicago White Sox.

In a post on X, Duggan shared the image of the two legends looking in phenomenal condition given the battles they’ve each shared, both having managed ill health in more recent years.

‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan was a firm favourite with WWE fans in his heyday

He was resplendent in a Knights Jersey, while Roberts posed wearing a Wigan Warriors shirt, having worn similar for wrestling appearances as far back as 1998.

With it he wrote: “Bumped into an old pal the other day at the @KnightsBaseball game! Always great to see @JakeSnakeDDT!”

In reply, fans couldn’t have been happier to see the duo looking so well. One said: “Two legends right here.”

Another said the ex-grapplers looked ‘fantastic’ while another wrote: “You guys look great! Loved watching you guys growing up!”

The snap was shared shortly after beloved Duggan shared an update on his Instagram account on a visit to the hospital for a cancer ‘check-up.’

The star, who survived multiple heart surgeries in 2018, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021 but overcame the illness after treatment.

In the post, he penned: “Every three months, I get my cancer check-up with my friend, Dr. Butler.

“Get your check-up! Stay alive! Enjoy life!!”

Roberts, too, has overcome significant health issues in his career, having previously battled cancer and, earlier this year, pneumonia, which left him in a serious condition in hospital.

The sight of the two wrestling greats standing tall together and looking in such good spirits will no doubt be a boost to fans who fondly remember their days in the ring.

They were a tag team together in Mid-South Wrestling 40 years ago, their collective efforts coming before their time in WWE a couple of years further on.

The rest, as they say, was history.
