England set big run chase at Headingley after twin Indian centuries ...Middle East

England and India are set to battle it out one final time at Headingley with all four results still possible after another engrossing day of Test cricket.

Contrasting centuries from KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118) in a 195 run fourth wicket partnership steered India away from danger and towards safety as both batters played with real concentration and skill throughout the morning session and most of the afternoon.

India’s opening bat and no.5 were simply irresistible and once again Pant had the crowd in raptures throughout, although he slowed considerably as he approached his milestone.

The day had started England’s way with Brydon Carse (3-80) striking with the day’s seventh delivery. Shubman Gill (8) inside-edged onto his off stump but from there the day belonged to India.

Throughout an attritional and tense first session most moments of high drama involved Pant.

Three times he advanced down the track to a new bowler. A tactic he has employed for some time. He got off the mark with an outside edge from Chris Woakes (1-45), slog drove Josh Tongue (3-72) for four and had a huge moment of fortune when he top edged Brydon Carse over leg slip for another boundary.

England lost a review for LBW when the same bowler had Pant pirouetting but DRS picked up an inside edge onto the pads.

And maybe there was a method in the madness because as the session continued slips were taken out, fielders pushed back and singles became easier to collect.

While the first three days were sold out there were roughly 4,000 tickets still available for day four and many had been snapped up by Indian cricket fans who were noticeably more vocal as the day progressed.

While a hushed silence greeted much of a tense opening session the flags started to be unfurled regularly and huge cheers filled the air as Pant and KL Rahul looked to accelerate after the lunch break.

Harry Brook who had his head in hands on day three after falling one short of 100, did the same thing in the morning session on day four after putting down a chance at gully to give KL Rahul a life on 59. It was to prove a costly miss.

And the Indian fans had two reasons to get to their feet in applause as first Rahul reached his ninth Test century, and certainly one of his finest, a sensational effort considering the circumstances, and then Pant’s second of the match as he became the first keeper in history to hit two in one match.

A morning session that yielded just 63 runs was replaced by one that gave up 145 with Pant walking off to huge cheers after holing out from the expensive Shoaib Bashir (2-90).

The evening session saw England fight back with Josh Tongue taking three wickets in an over to remove Shardul Thakur (4), Mohammed Siraj first ball and then castling Jasprit Bumrah second ball.

Prasish Krishna survived the hat trick but India were finally dismissed for 365 giving India six overs to bowl at England’s openers and an overall target of 371 which was reduced to 350 by the end with both Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley making it safely through to stumps.
