Each year since it began in 1963, National Small Business Week is held the first week of May. The event honors entrepreneurs and small businesses owners from all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. As part of the weeks events it will include a virtual summit with free education, and networking opportunities. The event is co-hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives). SCORE is a non-profit founded in 1964 and is the Nation’s Largest Network of Volunteer Business Mentors.
As either a small business owner, entrepreneur, or future small business owner, there are many free resources to help you get started or improve and grow your business. Some tips to access capital, resources, and mentoring are highlighted below:

1) Award Winners – Mamie Hoffer and Jason Futrell, Hoffer Flow Controls Inc. Headquartered in Elizabeth City were recognized as Small Business Persons of the Year Additional details of their story and can be found on the full list of award winners. As mentioned above, they include all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Their accomplishments can be found here along with additional people recognized for their contributions.
2) Free Education – The virtual summit is May 6-7. A wide range of topics include AI, Cybersecurity, creating a business plan, and much more. Check the agenda and registration is required.
3) Additional Resources – The SBA web site is filled with templates, training, funding programs, information on Federal Contracting and so much more. Resources from SCORE include help finding a mentor, workshops & events, along with additional templates and resources.
Think through
It’s not easy running a small business. Lots of demands and the owners are the last people to get paid. Leverage these free opportunities and possibly enlist the guidance of a mentor and other resources. Invest some time and list the nuggets you picked up from the education and find one or 2 you can implement immediately. Learning without action is just a hobby!
