The Arizona Diamondbacks eked out a 11-9 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in extras to avoid the sweep on Sunday after a six-run advantage completely evaporated.
Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo had a sensational day at the plate, with four hits (two doubles) and a walk in the 10th that gave Arizona its final run on the scoreboard. Besides the victory, it doubled as Perdomo’s first career four-hit game.
The D-backs offense, which had already produced eight runs on 10 hits, responded to extra baseball in a big way while the Phillies defense went the opposite direction.
Jose Alvarado, the go-to closer for Philadelphia, tossed 30 pitches and allowed three D-backs hits and, more critically, three runs.
First baseman Josh Naylor ignited the 10th with a single (his first knock of the game) and a throwing error from Kyle Schwarber ushered Eugenio Suarez through home plate. Following a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. walk, Tim Tawa brought Naylor home with a sacrifice fly and that was the end of Alvarado’s outing.
Alek Thomas, pinch hitting for Garrett Hampson, then converted his first at-bat into a single with one out. Gabriel Moreno, also pinch hitting, was hit by a pitch from Phillies reliever Carlos Hernandez and the Perdomo walk put a bow on a wild win.
How the Diamondbacks left the lead slip away
Righty reliever Shelby Miller, who had yet to concede a run in 13 appearances, struck out both Trea Turner and Bryce Harper to kick off the ninth but watched a towering ball from Schwarber reach the stands for a solo homer. Three straight singles by Phillies batters put the game at 8-8 and his second save was put on hold.
An eighth-frame zero from Arizona’s Ryan Thompson, featuring a groundout double play, had set up right-hander Shelby Miller for the save opportunity.
After sprinting out to a 7-1 lead through four frames, Arizona reliever Juan Morillo gave up a three-run home run to Philadelphia first baseman Weston Wilson.

Lefty starter Eduardo Rodriguez was responsible for the two runners on base in Alec Bohm and Edmundo Sosa, bringing his tally to three earned runs on an otherwise solid day. His final pitching line was 5.1 innings, five hits, four runs, four walks and 10 strikeouts, his second-most this season (12 against the Washington Nationals).
Right fielder Corbin Carroll, in the two hole for the D-backs, ended up being the game-extending run rather than the winner when he reached base on a fielder’s choice at Citizens Bank Park. A double to right field by designated hitter Randal Grichuk sent the speedy Carroll home from first.
