Harry Kane has finally won his first professional trophy – 5,223 days after his professional debut in 2010.
The England captain and one of the nations greatest-ever strikers ended football’s most agonising hoodoo as Bayern Munich became Bundesliga champions with two games left to play.
Kane now finally has the first trophy of his careerAFP Leverkusen slipped up again and handed the trophy back to MunichGettyHe did so without even playing as second-placed defending champions Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 away to Freiburg on Sunday.
The title was virtually wrapped up anyway, with Leverkusen needing to win their three remaining games, overturn a goal difference of 30, and Bayern to lose their last two.
However, record champions Bayern did have the title in their own hands on Saturday when a win against Leipzig would have wrapped things up.
Yet despite coming from 2-0 down to lead 3-2 late on, they conceded a stoppage time equaliser from Yussuf Poulsen to delay the celebrations.
Kane was suspended for that match away in East Germany, but was given special dispensation from the league to be on the sidelines to celebrate before Poulsen ruined the party.
On this occasion he was in the same boat as the rest of his teammates with a restaurant booked out in Munich before they lift the ‘Meisterschale’ trophy next time out against Borussia Monchengladbach on May 10.
The England captain has become one of the best strikers in the world ever since becoming a Tottenham regular a decade ago during the 2014/15 season.
Records fell along the way as he became the Three Lions and Spurs’ all-time top scorer, but a trophy never arrived.
Twice a runner up in the Carabao Cup, Spurs also finished second in the Premier League in 2017 and fell in the Champions League final to Liverpool in 2019.
The Euro 2020 final was then lost with England, and on his debut for Bayern after an £82million move in 2023 his new side lost the German Super Cup to RB Leipzig.
Kane’s collection of silver medals was becoming painfulGettyNevertheless, Kane would break record after record for his new side, but turmoil at management level saw Thomas Tuchel clash with directors all while Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen assailed to an unbeaten campaign.
Another chance came to break his duck at international level, but England again lost the Euro 2024 final, this time to Spain, meaning Kane was back at Bayern with only one goal in his mind.
Leverkusen ended one of their pathways to silverware in the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal, and later there was a narrow defeat to Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals.
However, Bayern got the job done in the league, and Kane’s first-ever long-overdue trophy lift will now be the historical ‘Meisterschale’ plate that goes to the German champion.
Kane will be back available for that clash after being suspended for their first championship point against Leipzig.
Also collecting his first trophy will be former Spurs teammate Dier, while Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany added to his 2023 EFL Championship title with Burnley.
There will also be time reserved for Thomas Muller, who will be leaving his lifelong club at the end of the season.
Having recorded a club-record 500 Bundesliga appearances, he added his 13th title before departing in the summer.
But this win will mean more to Kane than anyone, as honorary president Uli Hoeness explained.
“No one deserves it more than him,” the club icon said. “He’s become a real FC Bayern player in recent months.
“He fights, he scores an incredible number of goals, but he also works for the team.”
