As per The Indian Express, a source claimed that the selectors were keen to have a player who would take part in all 5 Tests as captain and vice-captain. The report stated that Bumrah will not be playing all the matches.
“We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches, and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain be certain and play all five Tests,” the source said.
Bumrah, who suffered a back injury in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, made his comeback in IPL 2025 after spending nearly 3 months on the sidelines. He was India’s most overworked bowler in the previous calendar year. As a part of workload management, the selectors have decided that he won’t play in all 5 Tests in England.
As a result of his injury, Bumrah missed the Champions Trophy and nearly the first half of IPL 2025.
Who will be India’s next vice-captain?
The report added that the selectors were keen to groom an youngster as vice-captain as he could potentially go on to become the next captain. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are two viable options, since they are of the optimal age. Meanwhile, the likes of Virat Kohli, Jadeja and Rahul are seen as too old while Jaiswal is too young.
