Syrian security arrested the Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Talal Naji, today, Saturday, May 3, for unknown reasons.
The Qatari news website “Alaraby” reported, quoting an unnamed source described as knowledgeable, that Syrian security arrested Naji in his temporary office at the Quds radio building in the al-Mazraa area of the capital, Damascus.
The source described the arrest as “sudden and without prior notice,” indicating that the Secretary-General was working on reorganizing his main office after it was stormed following the fall of the previous Syrian regime.
According to the same source, the Syrian administration did not target the cadres of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) after the fall of the regime, except for the arrest of about 20 individuals due to their involvement in military actions in favor of the previous regime.
The same source stated that a member of the leadership council of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Khaled Meshaal, intervened at the time to avoid any repercussions on the senior leadership and its leaders.
As of the time of this report, the PFLP had not commented on the news of the arrest of its Secretary-General on its official channels.
Enab Baladi did not record any official comment from the Syrian government so far.
Naji is one of the prominent leaders in Palestinian movements and has a good relationship with the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas.
Naji was elected Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in 2021, following the death of his predecessor, Ahmad Jibril.
The PFLP is one of the Palestinian organizations that has its headquarters in Syria and took a pro-regime stance during the Syrian revolution.
The Palestinian organization participated in the battles alongside the previous regime against the opposition.
The second incident in two weeks
The arrest of the Secretary-General of the PFLP is the second of its kind in two weeks.
In mid-April, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, “al-Quds Brigades,” announced that Syrian security arrested the Syrian field commander Khaled Khaled and the head of the executive committee, Yasser al-Zafari.
Al-Quds Brigades indicated that the two leaders were arrested for unknown reasons.
Al-Quds Brigades demanded the Syrian government to release the two leaders, affirming that “their weapon in Syria was not directed at anything other than the Palestinian borders,” according to their expression.
Washington had previously presented the Syrian administration with eight conditions to ease the US sanctions imposed on Syria.
According to the magazine “Al-Majalla,” one of the conditions included an “official public announcement prohibiting all Palestinian militias and political activities and the expulsion of their members to calm Israeli concerns.”
