Former CSK star Ambati Rayudu reckons that majority of CSK’s squad cannot be retained for the next season. His remarks come after the five-time champions suffered their seventh defeat in the ongoing IPL 2025. Rayudu claimed that he was sure Dhoni was already thinking about building a younger team for the next season.

Speaking on Kuhl Fans Match Center on JioHotstar, Rayudu claimed that bringing in young guns like Dewald Brevis and Ayush Mhatre was much-needed for a struggling CSK. MS Dhoni and co. came under fire for playing conventional cricket not suited for T20s and relying too much on veterans instead of giving youngsters opportunities. However, CSK managed to slightly change that perception by giving chances to the likes of Rasheed, Mhatre and Brevis and it paid off.
“The change in personnel was needed, and what we’re seeing now is more of a trial run for next season. I don’t think CSK can carry forward most of their current squad—at best, seven or eight players might be retained,” Rayudu said.
The defeat to SRH on Friday marked the first time that Pat Cummins and co. have beaten CSK in Chennai. Right now, CSK are just fighting for pride and are all but eliminated from the tournament.
“I know it’s the lowest of lows, but it’s also a great learning for CSK. If you rest on your laurels and don’t keep an eye on the future, this is what can happen. From here on, they’ll be very, very vigilant about evolving with the game. Even MS Dhoni has acknowledged that the game has moved on, and I’m sure he’s already thinking about building a team for next year,” Rayudu added.

Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets to stay alive in the playoff race. Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy stitched together a half-century stand for 6th wicket to chase down 155 after Ishan Kishan scored 44.
CSK were bowled out for 154 as Harshal Patel bagged 4/28. Dewald Brevis was the star for CSK with 25-ball 42. But Kamindu Mendis’s wonder catch dismissed him. Ayush Mhatre once again gave CSK a good start with 19-ball 30. However, as the other batters failed, CSK gave away that advantage.
Earlier, Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bowl first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. CSK dropped Rachin Ravindra for Dewald Brevis, making three changes to their Playing XI.
