Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have faced challenges across all departments in IPL 2025. Their batting lineup is underwhelming, the fielding is average, and the bowlers are not delivering effective performances. A particular concern is Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana, who has been a concern this season. He has bowled the most wides in the league, alongside Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande, with 21 wides each.
Pathirana’s decline vs SRH
In their recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk last night, Pathirana’s performance was disappointing. He bowled five wides and frequently missed his yorker deliveries, turning them into full tosses that were easily hit by the opposition batters. This season’s performance is far removed from last year’s success, where he took 13 wickets in just six matches, which persuaded CSK to retain him for INR 13 crore.
Coach Fleming on Pathirana’s form
When asked about Pathirana’s struggles, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming attributed it to changes in Pathirana’s bowling action made by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. “Pathirana in South Africa was way off, and yes there was an issue with his action and that’s probably a question for Sri Lankan cricket but we’ve certainly tried to get him back to form and get him back to what we think is his best action,” Fleming explained after the match.
Pathirana failed to take any wickets against SRH and conceded runs at an economy of 9.00. However, Fleming remains optimistic. “He’s not far away, he’s made massive improvement in the 2 months since South Africa, and we hope he keeps making that improvement. Part of his evolution is he is going to be asked to change things and at some point he will have to settle on an action that gives him the best results,” he added.
Moving forward to win against PBKS
As CSK looks to climb from the bottom of the standings, their next challenge will be against Punjab Kings at Chepauk on Wednesday. The team will be hoping for a turnaround to gain momentum in the tournament.
