Nathan Aspinall once had part of the stage fall on him immediately after winning a match at the International Darts Open.

The hilarious incident occurred following the English darts star’s second round victory over Mario Vandenbogaerde in Riesa, Germany in 2023.

Having rounded off a 6-4 win over the Belgian, Aspinall went straight over to shake hands with the officials, but as he made his way across the stage, he was suddenly caught off guard.

A sticker board on the backdrop bearing the name of the competition fell down and landed his head.

Fortunately for ‘The Asp’, he was able to avoid injury, with the piece of material looking to be incredibly lightweight and bouncing straight off him onto the floor.

The bizarre moment left everyone involved in hysterics, with stunned referee Kirk Bevins unable to hide his amusement as he watched on.

Aspinall certainly found the mishap funny, bursting out laughing after looking around to try and work out what exactly had happened.

He continued to make light of the incident, pretending to fall to the floor in pain, while the officials could be seen in stitches in the background.

And the Englishman had the perfect response when asked about the incident in his post-match interview.

The interviewer jokingly quizzed: “Forget the game, how’s the head after the stage?”

A laughing Aspinall immediately came back: “I tell you what, I’m putting a claim in!”

After the hilarious quip, the Stockport native then reflected on his victory over Vandenbogaerde, which saw him progress into the last 16 of the Pro Tour event.

With an average of just over 96 in the encounter, and a finishing percentage of 60 per cent, Aspinall admitted he hadn’t been at his best.

He reflected: “It was a nice game to get into the tournament.

“I thought I played okay there, but I didn’t really get pushed so I didn’t really have to produce anything special.

“But always happy to get the win.”

But with this his first win on the European Tour, Aspinall was nonetheless delighted to be off the mark.

The 2019 UK Open champion continued: “I’m finally on the European Tour ranking now.

“’The European Tour events are so important to the ranking. Being in that top 16 is a massive advantage.

“If you get a couple of wins every single week, you’re very hard to catch on in that top 16. It makes your life a lot easier.”

And after completing his media duties at the Sachsen Arena, Aspinall later took to social media to again poke fun at the game’s major talking point.

Responding to a clip of the stage collapsing on his head posted on X, he joked it could bode well for his chances of glory at the event.

The darts player wrote: “God has sent me a sign. This could be a good weekend,” followed by a string of laughing emojis.

Unfortunately for Aspinall, his optimism was soon killed off, as he was then dumped out of the tournament in the next round, suffering a 6-3 defeat to Germany’s Martin Schindler.

Gerwyn Price would ultimately triumph in Germany, beating three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen 8-4 in the final.

Meanwhile Aspinall is still yet to taste victory in the competition, falling again at the round of 16 stage in 2024.

This year, the 33-year-old came agonisingly close to ending his drought, progressing all the way to the final in early April, before losing out to Stephen Bunting, who triumphed 8-5.
