Chris Eubank Sr will be conspicuous by his absence as his son faces a career-defining showdown with Conor Benn this weekend.
The British boxing legend has distanced himself from the legacy fight, in stark contrast to the actions of former rival Nigel Benn.
Eubank Sr was very vocal about his son as he made his way through the pro ranks, almost acting as a promoterGettyBenn Sr has been heavily involved in his son’s camp for the grudge match and will be at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.
However, fans won’t be able to enjoy a reunion between ‘The Dark Destroyer’ and Eubank Sr after their epic battles in 1990 and 1993.
The latter acted as a mentor and trainer for Chris Eubank Jr during his early days as a pro, but has already ruled out an appearance.
Why is Eubank Sr not at his son’s fight with Conor Benn?
The pair’s relationship has been strained since Eubank Jr chose to limit his dad’s input in his professional boxing career.
‘Next Gen’ admitted Eubank Sr struggled with his decision, which was then impacted further by the death of his son Sebastian in 2021.
The father and son duo did cross paths when attending cousin Harlem Eubank’s dust-up with Tyrone McKenna in March.
Unfortunately, their first exchange in years went poorly, with Eubank Sr originally displeased with the terms of the middleweight fight.
His next gripe centred around his offspring’s decision to slap Benn with an egg, in reference to ‘The Destroyer’ citing an ‘over-consumption of eggs’ behind his positive drugs test for the banned substance clomifene.
Eubank Sr told his son to his face he ‘doesn’t condone’ his actions, and branded the fighter as ‘disgraceful’ over what he did.
The 58-year-old even went as far as to claim that Eubank Jr should have his licence revoked for making a mockery of boxing.
Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank had a fierce rivalryGetty Tensions between their sons escalated after Eubank Jr slapped Benn with an eggGetty“He must have his licence revoked,” he stated on The Sun’s No Glove Lost show. “They have built it as a legacy fight.
“This started in 1990 with me and Nigel. So my son, he smashes an egg on the face of Conor. You want me to be associated with this?
“This is not legacy. That is bringing the game of boxing into disrepute. That would’ve had a disqualifying effect back in my day. [It’s] no different to the language of Conor – the man speaks like he’s a possessed drunk.”
He added: “These two young men are trashing what me and Mr Benn did!
“They’re trashing it – and the public are following it because ‘Oh, it’s just entertainment’. It’s not just entertainment. Boxing is a standard-bearing vocation.”
Nigel Benn, meanwhile, has defended Eubank Jr over his father’s comments, telling Sky Sports: “I’m so sad Chris is not here, it’s a family affair.
Eubank Sr used to train his son, but that is no longer the caseGetty“I don’t like to see a father and son fall out publicly; sort out your issues behind closed doors and make up. I wish Chris didn’t say that about his son publicly.
“Regardless of him smashing the egg, he’s not a disgrace. He’s done really well for himself, [Sr] shouldn’t be saying that in public about his son, and I’m sad about that. I wish Chris backed his son.”
The first bell for Eubank Jr vs Benn will be at 10pm.
talkSPORT will have live coverage of the fight with commentary from Adam Catterall, Gareth A Davies, Spencer Oliver and John Rawling.
