The 55th annual Chicano Park Day marks the historic April day when students began a community rebellion against public construction of highways and parking lots in Barrio Logan and re-took the land for a park. They soon persuaded city officials to their side and Chicano Park was born. It’s also home to the renowned murals that adorn the large pylons of the Coronado bridge. Head to the park at 10 a.m. Saturday for the latest edition of the free community festival, with Aztec dance, a lowrider exhibition, art workshops and more.
Make it two free fests in one day with San Diego EarthFest in Balboa Park. The first Earth Day followed a senator’s call on students to fight for environmental causes. This year in San Diego, the event includes a food court, live music, kids activities, yoga and wellness classes. In addition, vendors will offer sustainable products and services. Several dozen environmental, conservation and rescue groups also will take part from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Park Boulevard and Presidents Way. Reserve spots online.
Want more Earth Day? The WorldBeat Cultural Center at Balboa Park hosts the 33rd annual Multi-Cultural Earth Day, focused on climate and food justice, at 11 a.m. Sunday.
