Pope Francis, who was elected pope in 2013 and died on on Monday, April 21, explained his choice, saying, "Before, when I used to come, I would always go there on Sunday mornings when I was in Rome. I would stay there for a while. There is a very great bond."

Per the basilica, there are currently seven popes buried there, includingPopeHonorius III, St. Pius V, Pope Sixtus V, Pope Clement VIII, Pope Paul V and Pope Clement IX.
