University of Northern Colorado softball player Anna Wilming was named the Big Sky Conference pitcher of the week, the conference announced Monday.
Wilming, a sophomore from Columbus, Ohio and transfer from Valparaiso, helped the Bears to a 3-game sweep of Montana in the opening weekend of Big Sky Conference play. Wilming had a 2-0 record with a complete-game, 1-hit shutout of the Grizzlies. Wilming struck out two, walked three and was efficient with only 77 pitches in the win.
Wilming picked up her second win in relief in the series finale, a 9-6 victory on a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh by Krista Francia. Wilming came into the game in the top of the seventh with runners on second and third and two out in a 6-6 game. Wilming walked the first batter she faced before striking out Montana’ Anna Cockhill to end the threat.
“I’m proud of Anna,” UNC coach Dedeann Pendleton-Helm said in a news release. “She has been working hard all year on the details and it really showed up this past weekend.”
Wilming’s honor by the Big Sky is the third for UNC this season. Outfielder Nya Chacon was honored as the co-player of the week with Idaho State’s Gracie Smith on March 24. Isabelle DiNapoli shared co-pitcher of the week honors March 3 with ISU’s Kasey Aguinaga.
