Deana Lemos-Garcia has announced her candidacy for the Greeley-Evans District 6 Board of Education.
Lemos-Garcia wants to focus on ensuring students are career or college-ready. Preparing students for higher education or the workforce opens the door to opportunities and provides better financial stability and independence, she said in a letter announcing her run for the board of education. These efforts also equip students with life skills — communication, critical thinking and problem-solving — that will benefit them throughout their lives and make them productive members of society.
Lemos-Garcia’s campaign also highlights a desire to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment. Creating a safe, secure and inclusive space for learning helps students focus and engage in the classroom, better protects their mental well-being, encourages participation and reduces the fear of harm, she said.
Her plans as a potential elected board member also include addressing the growing needs in the district, including updating infrastructure, integrating new technology and offering a diverse range of educational opportunities. She said these actions will attract educators, strengthen the local economy and build a more engaged community.
Born and raised in Northern Colorado, Lemos-Garcia has called Greeley home for 20 years. With a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado, she has acquired 25 years of experience as a human resources professional, according to her letter.
She has also prioritized staying involved in her community by coaching Special Olympics, serving as a substitute teacher in District 6 and holding roles in higher education and government. She currently serves on multiple local boards, including The Greeley Dream Team, High Plains Library District, Leanna’s Closet and the BMS Foundation.
The terms for four out of seven seats on the District 6 board will expire in November.
“My campaign is about creating an environment where students, teachers, families and the community can thrive together,” Lemos-Garcia wrote. “In order to succeed in tomorrow’s world, every student must matter.”
