Guard Joson Sanon plans transfer from ASU to St. John’s ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Arizona State freshman Joson Sanon told ESPN on Wednesday that he has opted to sign with St. John’s after spending his freshman season with Arizona State.

The decision to enter the portal and then pick a school comes before ASU (13-19) finishes its season in the College Basketball Crown postseason tournament that tips off against Nebraska on Monday.

“Coach (Rick) Pitino believes in me and my potential and what he can do for me,” Sanon told ESPN. “He preaches working hard, and I want to show him I’m the hardest working player that’s ever played for him. The way Coach P teaches defense is something I want to invest my time into.”

His agent, Derek Malloy of LIFT Sports Management, told ESPN that he pushed Sanon to pursue playing under Pitino, who landed at the school last season and led a turnaround to finish 31-5. The Red Storm fell to Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“New York City, Madison Square Garden, Rick Pitino. If we weren’t the first to take it, I’d envy the person who did,” Malloy told ESPN.

Joson Sanon’s season with ASU basketball and how he got there

Sanon averaged 11.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and an assist in 28.3 minutes over 27 games for Arizona State in 2024-25.

He shot 42% from the field and 37% from 3. After a red-hot nonconference run, Sanon battled injuries and, with that, inconsistencies.

Sanon finished strong, however, shooting 51% overall and averaging 18.8 points in the final four games of the regular season and a single Big 12 Tournament outing, all of which were losses.

The four-star high school prospect initially signed with the Sun Devils after flipping his commitment from Arizona.

The 6-foot-5 Sanon held offers from UConn, Kentucky and Kansas, among other blueblood programs. He later reclassified to the 2024 class to make him eligible for the 2025 NBA Draft.

Sanon and five-star prospect Jayden Quaintance were expected to lead Arizona State to new heights as part of a top-10 recruiting class, but the team fell well short of expectations and finished 13-19 overall in the team’s first season in the Big 12.

The Sun Devils lost in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament and missed the NCAA Tournament.

ASU coach Bobby Hurley is expected to return as head coach for 2025-26, going into the final season of his contract.
