Just imagine you’re the captain of an IPL team, and in your squad are two all-rounders — Washington Sundar & Rahul Tewatia. Who would you pick in your playing XI? For most of the choice will be clear in Washi, but perhaps GT skipper Shubman Gill and coach Ashish Nehra don’t think the same way. Somehow, Tewatia deserves to be in the playing XI over Washi, a proven all-rounder for Team India.

On Saturday, once again the GT management went ahead with Tewatia, while Washington Sundar was named as one of the Impact Subs. That, when he bowls economically, and can bat up in the order, and be explosive too. On the other hand, Tewatia hasn’t been much reliable. And just for reference, let’s compare their performances.
Tewatia hasn’t bowled in two years in the IPL, and last bowled in IPL 2023. In fact, his last wicket was in 2021 season for RR, and since then has gone wicketless. This year, in 7 matches, he has scored 30 runs, at an average of 10. Yes, the last year was decent for him where he scored 188 lower down the order, but what purpose is he solving right now in GT?
Baffling Choice by GT in IPL 2025
Whereas out of the team’s 7* matches, Washi has played only two and has come out with decent returns. Against SRH, batting at No. 4 he scored a brisk 49 from 29 deliveries, taking his side to a win, but was dropped again in the next match. Then in GT vs LSG, he failed with the bat, but was excellent with the ball, where he returned with figures of 1/28.. so all this just doesn’t make sense.
But then this injustice isn’t new for the Tamil Nadu all-rounder. He has been around in the IPL since 2017 and has played only 62 matches until now — where he has picked up 38 wickets at an economy of 7.53, and scored 429 runs at an average of 14 — largely due to the lack of opportunities, even when he is playing.
