AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A teenager suffered serious injuries, and another person was "detained" after a reported shooting in south Austin, according to the Austin Police Department.
Officers responded to the report of a shoot/stab hotshot call around 2:20 p.m. near a bus stop in the 10700 block of South First Street. That's near Akins High School, APD said in a news release.
Officers arrived and found the teen with a gunshot wound, according to APD. Police said Austin-Travis County EMS took the teen "to a local trauma facility with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries."
"Officers immediately searched the area and located a subject nearby. One subject was detained," police said.
The Akins High School principal confirmed in a letter that the teen who was shot was a student of the high school. No other details will be provided on the student, due to privacy, the letter said.
"Out of an abundance of caution, we will have increased police presence on campus tomorrow," the letter said.
KXAN reached out to the Austin Independent School District Tuesday afternoon, and a spokesperson confirmed Akins High School was on a hold due to the active scene.
“During a Hold, keep the hallways clear and students continue their work as usual,” AISD said.
The letter later confirmed the hold was lifted at 4:01 p.m. before going into what the district called a "Secure" for 14 minutes before returning to normal operations.
"During a Secure, all activities continue inside, but no one may leave or enter school buildings," the letter said.
The high school will also provide "additional counseling services" for students and staff, the letter said.
No other details were released Tuesday.
