Oklahoma’s athletic department has released a statement addressing an unfortunate incident that occurred after the final buzzer sounded on OU’s loss to Kentucky on Thursday night.
Cameras showed an Oklahoma fan appearing to throw a beer at Kentucky players as they were exiting the court shortly after the game ended. The object — believed to be a beer can — nearly struck Kentucky center and Oklahoma native Brandon Garrison in the head.
In the statement, Oklahoma says it’s “closely reviewing all available footage” in an attempt to identify the person responsible for the incident. Here’s the statement in full:
We are aware of an incident that occurred following last night’s men’s basketball contest against Kentucky involving the throwing of a beverage can toward players. We are closely reviewing all available footage and are working to identify involved parties. We are also in communication with the Southeastern Conference. Anyone with information regarding the incident should provide that by emailing oah@ou.edu. The University of Oklahoma does not in any way condone this type of fan behavior and it will not be tolerated. We will take appropriate and necessary action against anyone who conducts themself in such a manner. We apologize to University of Kentucky players, coaches and fans.
As for the game itself, Kentucky won in dramatic fashion. Otega Oweh, who spent his first 2 seasons in Norman, made the game-winning shot in the final seconds of the contest. Oweh was consistently boo’d by Oklahoma fans throughout the night but ended up getting the last laugh.
Oklahoma is firmly on the NCAA Tournament bubble with just a few games remaining before the SEC Tournament. The Sooners will be in action again on Saturday against Ole Miss in Oxford. Kentucky will face Auburn at home on Saturday.
