Chicago Bears Assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham has successfully completed his interview for the vacant Jacksonville Jaguars general manager position.

The Jags sent this out to make it officially official:

Jacksonville has officially finished interviews with the following general manager candidates:

Chad Alexander, Los Angeles Chargers Assistant GM Brandon Brown, New York Giants Assistant GM Trey Brown, Cincinnati Bengals Senior Personnel Executive James Gladstone, Los Angeles Rams Director of Scouting Strategy Terrance Gray, Buffalo Bills Director of Player Personnel Jon Robinson, Former Tennessee Titans GM Josh Williams, San Francisco 49ers Director/Scouting and Football Operations

Adding Ian Cunningham to the list makes eight known candidates who have chopped it up with Jacksonville. There are some intriguing names on that list. And while this might be rooted in my own biases, I believe that Cunningham is the best of this bench. At a minimum, there is some upside here for the Jaguars since Ian’s work history goes deeper than his time with the Bears. Cunningham worked in the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens front offices before landing in Chicago. Cutting your teeth with those franchises and moving up the organizational ladder probably means you’re doing something right.

Ian Cunningham is a top candidate for the Jaguars’ general manager gig

This is not Ian Cunningham’s first rodeo. The Chicago Bears assistant general manager has interviewed for general manager positions with the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, and Tennessee Titans (twice). But in each instance, the interviewing team has gone in a different direction. However, things could be different this time around. Cunningham’s name has been floated as a top candidate for the Jaguars’ GM position since January and the whispers have only grown in the weeks since rumors began surfacing.

If Ian Cunningham ends up taking the Jacksonville Jaguars GM position, the Bears will receive compensatory draft picks at the end of the third round in each of the next two NFL Drafts. But if Cunningham gets passed over again, then Chicago’s football team will retain the right-hand man for General Manager Ryan Poles for another year. That would not be the worst outcome. However, I feel as if Cunningham has paid his dues and is worthy of an opportunity to call his own shots.

We’ll continue to monitor this situation as news surfaces.
