Paul Finebaum doesn’t enjoy a College Football Playoff National Championship without a team from the SEC. And while he’s not prepared to say the 12-team format is going to be dominated by the Big Ten moving forward, Finebaum is at least cognizant enough to admit the status of 2024.
During his Monday appearance on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” Finebaum admitted it’s starting to make him cringe to see others try and defend the postseason performance of SEC football this year:
“I don’t know how anyone can make that statement,” said Finebaum about the idea that the Big Ten is poised to dominate the new Playoff. “The one thing I think you can accurately say is what we have just witnessed. I cringe every time I see a pundit say ‘Well, the SEC’s not dead, and let me give you the overall numbers for the year.’ I don’t care what happened in September and October. What I care about right now is the way the SEC has finished the season, and it has finished the season badly.”
Finebaum went on to call fans to admit the nature of this year’s Playoff. That includes Ohio State, a team non-fans of the Buckeyes love to clown for Ryan Day’s failures, beating 2 SEC teams. Notre Dame also conquered Georgia, the program that many expected to bring Kirby Smart a 3rd national championship this season.
“I think we have to be honest and admit it. Ohio State beat 2 SEC schools, let’s use what we’ve seen with our own eyes to tell the story. Notre Dame beat Georgia which was a lot of people’s pick to get to Atlanta. I think you just have to sometimes, when it doesn’t go your way… just accept it and move on,” said Finebaum. “I think the next week will be a very long one for the SEC. It could have been worse if Penn State pulled that out… but right now, accept it. The SEC is at home for the first time in nearly 20 years on a back-to-back national championship basis.
“That doesn’t mean that we aren’t any good. I think that’s what we get hung up on… but what you do in the Playoff defines you. Just ask Josh Allen if he were to lose next weekend.”
