A TARGET shopper blasted the state of the checkout lines that emerged in-store during the holiday season.

The customer lashed out at the popular chain because only two registers were apparently open.

The shopper, known only as Nick, shared a picture on X that showed families and other shoppers waiting with their buggies.

And, the lines seemed to stretch down the aisles.

“This is what a normal checkout looks like at my store,” Nick said.

“30 people in regular checkout and more in self-checkout. 2 registers open.”

A Target spokesperson swiftly responded and issued a groveling apology.

“We appreciate you bringing this to our attention,” they said.

“We apologize and would like to document this information for our store leadership team in hopes of creating a better checkout experience.”

They invited the shopper to send a direct message.

It’s unclear if an investigation was launched.

The state of checkout lines has proved to be a common complaint among Target shoppers.

Another shopper in California was left less than impressed over his experience at a Target store.

He claimed that he faced a 22-minute wait to check out his items.

The long wait happened at the last store he was visiting.

Shoppers have also berated how they’ve encountered long lines and few registers open.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed up checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at various locations were made available only for Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed during specific hours, and more cashiers were offered instead.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting fueled the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would stop the fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, that test run has been phased out.

At Target, items are being limited at self-checkout.

Last fall, the brand surveyed new express self-checkout lanes across 200 stores with 10 items or less for more convenience.

As of March 2024, this policy has been expanded across 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers have also spotted their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

One customer was far from thrilled after spending a whopping $600 in-store.

Target, like other retailers, has introduced measures to ensure checkouts still remain efficient.

In 2023, bosses trialed a system that saw limits on the number of items that can be scanned at self-checkouts introduced.

A policy limiting shoppers to a maximum of 10 items was tested, and bosses were pleased with the impact.

This has been rolled out more widely across Target’s network of stores.

But the measure has been blasted by shoppers, particularly when there have been long lines for self-checkout.
