The new musical, which garnered 10 nods (the most-nominated show alongside the musicals Death Becomes Her and Maybe Happy Ending, which also each received 10), is inspired by the real-life ensemble of Cuban musicians who created the 1997 studio album of the same name.

“Across the board, our goal for the show was to celebrate and honor not just the music, but the culture,” choreographer Patricia Delgado exclusively told Parade as part of the recent cover story spotlighting Broadway’s diverse and star-studded season.

Delgado, who choreographed the show alongside husband Justin Peck, feels that the theater community is “ready to be pushed in this direction” of celebrating people of all races and cultural backgrounds. “And I feel like we should just keep going,” she said, “because there's so much we have to say, and there's a space for all of us. It's a huge moment.”
The show’s Tony-nominated star Natalie Venetia Belcon, who plays Omara in the ‘90s, told Parade that it’s “really something special to be in a room with [these artists] and then seeing it all on the stage,” adding that the Broadway landscape “didn’t used to be that way.”

“It's a feeling I can't describe,” she said. “I don't really have words for it.”
“That's the stuff that makes you want to keep going,” she continued.
Hosted by Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, the 78th Tony Awards will celebrate excellence during Broadway’s 2024-25 season.
