CITY GROUND — It will have been some time since “Gary Neville, you’re a w****r!” has floated so loudly and freely around a football stadium. And yet here it was, providing the playful backdrop to one of the tensest occasions of Nottingham Forest’s recent history.
By the end of it, they had qualified for the Conference League – in Europe for the first time in 30 years. But it was an accomplishment tinged with the disappointment of what might been. From flying all season, to those flighty few months in third, to an end-of-season decline.
To increase the pain, there was every other result, bar their own against Champions League rivals, going their way on the afternoon – Aston Villa and Newcastle both losing. And losing in such scrappy fashion, having created very little themselves.
The playful piss-taking from the crowd, after Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis banned the popular Sky pundit from attending the stadium, actually had the advantageous effect of deflating some of the occasion’s tension.
