Novak Djokovic showed his dominance on the court once again as he defeated Yannick Hanfman to reach the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open. The Serbian tennis star demonstrated his superior skills and determination, outplaying his opponent with precision and finesse.
Djokovic's performance in this match exemplified why he is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. His strategic play, powerful serves, and flawless technique were on full display, leaving Hanfman struggling to keep up with the pace and intensity of Djokovic's game.
At the end of the match, the crowd sang 'happy birthday' to Djokovic and he was also presented with a chocolate birthday cake by tournament officials.
"My birthday wouldn't have been the same if I had not won the match," said Djokovic.
"I'm very grateful for all the people that came out to support me and thank you for the birthday song, that was very special for me."
Tallon Griekspoor.
Djokovic took a wild card to play in Geneva in a bid to rescue an alarming dip in form ahead of next week’s French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year. His record this year is now 13 wins and five defeats, and he has yet to reach a tournament final in 2024.
Triumph at the US Open later that season saw him win a 24th major, with a combined collection of 10 Australian Open, seven Wimbledon, four US Open, and three Roland Garros crowns to his name.
Rafael Nadal the only other man to win multiple titles at all four events.
The record 24-time Grand Slam champion wasted a set point and had to save four break points before the match was interrupted by rainfall.
He had to save another break point after play resumed before serving out the set with an ace.
Hanfmann had eliminated Andy Murray in the first round 7-5, 6-2.
Djokovic received a wild card at the clay-court warmup event for the French Open.
Seeking his first title of the season, Djokovic will next face either Denis Shapovalov or Tallon Griekspoor.
The Geneva Open final is scheduled for Saturday, one day before main draw play starts at Roland Garros, where Djokovic is the defending champion.
