Olympic Marathon, etching her name into the annals of sporting history. The marathon, known for its grueling nature and demanding physical and mental endurance, saw O'Keeffe display exceptional skill and determination.
O'Keeffe's journey to this triumph was not without obstacles. She had faced numerous setbacks throughout her career, battling injuries and self-doubt. However, she never wavered in her commitment to her craft. Her unwavering dedication to training and relentless pursuit of excellence set her apart from her competitors.
Fiona O’Keeffe became the first woman to win the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in her debut at the distance on Saturday.
O’Keeffe, 25, pulled away from the lead pack of five in the 19th mile and ended up clocking 2 hours, 22 minutes, 10 seconds, an Olympic Trials record.
Joan Benoit’s record as the youngest woman to win an Olympic Trials marathon.
On the men's side, training partners and good friends Conner Mantz and Clayton Young finished 1-2 to qualify for Paris. They celebrated with the crowd as they made their way to the finish line. Mantz finished in a time of 2:09:05 as Young gave way near the end and finished a second behind.
Leonard Korir used a late surge to take third, but he now plays the waiting game until May to see whether a third Olympic spot is unlocked on the American men's marathon side. He finished in 2:09.57, just off the time (2:08.10) he needed to guarantee a spot in the Paris Games.
Finishing third was Leonard Korir, an Army staff sergeant who missed making the Tokyo Olympics marathon team by 3 seconds in 2020. He's likely to join Mantz and Young in Paris, but will have to wait until May to find out if the U.S. has earned that third spot for the Olympics. While the U.S. women have run fast enough qualifying times to unlock all three spots for the race, the men have only opened two, and will need to see if they finish high enough in international rankings to earn that third slot.
All six would be running in the Olympic marathon for the first time.
"I was not expecting this performance," O'Keeffe told NBC after her win. "I had to pinch myself with eight miles to go and say 'stay calm, don't freak out.' "
