Rosalynn Carter was honored Tuesday at a tribute service in Georgia, with her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, in attendance. President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, first lady Jill Biden and all the living former first ladies were also present.
Rosalynn Carter died on Nov. 19 at the age of 96. Jimmy Carter, her husband of 77 years who turned 99 last month, was by her side in her final moments, her son said last week. Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care at home since February.
Amy Carter, the first couple's only daughter, tearfully read a letter Jimmy Carter wrote to Rosalynn 75 years ago while he was serving in the Navy. Amy Carter, who was seated next to her father, was often seen holding his hand throughout the service.
"My mom spent most of her life in love with my dad. Their partnership and love story was a defining feature of her life," she said. "Because he isn't able to speak to you today, I am going to share some of his words about loving and missing her."
Rosalynn Carter has been praised for a half-century of advocacy for better mental health care in America and reducing stigma attached to mental illness. She brought attention to the tens of millions of people who work as unpaid caregivers in U.S. households. And she’s gained new acclaim for how integral she was to her husband’s political rise and in his terms as Georgia’s governor and the 39th president.
Jason Carter, himself a former state senator and one-time Democratic nominee for governor, called her “the best politician in the family,” a distinction Jimmy Carter never disputed.
“My wife is much more political,” the former president told The Associated Press in 2021.
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. The pair are friends of the Carters and have worked with the non-profit Habitat for Humanity projects.
After the service, Mrs Carter began the journey home to Plains - which the Carters called home for decades.
On Wednesday morning, a private funeral service will take place for family and close friends at the Maranatha Baptist Church in the town.
She will be buried at the Carter Home and Garden, part of the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park. Her husband will be laid to rest next to her when the time comes.
