The day after 9/11, my girlfriend and I met my brother David and his girlfriend (who later became his wife) for dinner. We considered ourselves among the lucky ones. We hadn’t been at the site at the time of the attack. None of our friends and family had been killed. Yes, the smell of the burning buildings filled the air, half the city was shut down, and we were all processing the trauma from the previous day. But we were the lucky ones.
