As the country’s largest public housing system, the New York City Housing Authority has provided a lifeline to millions of New Yorkers in the nearly 90 years since it was created. As the single largest portfolio of deeply affordable housing in the five boroughs, it’s an integral part of our infrastructure — one that has allowed individuals who otherwise might not have access to housing to raise families, pursue their careers and make a difference in the world around them. But 90 years is a long time for any institution to go without change, and after decades of deferred maintenance, NYCHA’s age is showing.
